A patio should fit how you use your yard and work with the conditions around your home. Before choosing colors or finishes, think about furniture, access, drainage, and the preparation needed beneath the finished surface.

For homeowners in Delaware and throughout Central Ohio, a clear plan helps establish the scope before construction begins.

Plan around how you will use the space

Decide whether your patio will primarily serve as a dining area, a place to relax, or a gathering space for family and friends.

Consider the actual dimensions of your furniture, including room to pull out chairs and walk around seating. Identify where grills and other equipment will go, allowing the clearances their manufacturers require.

Share those details with your contractor before settling on the patio’s size and shape.

Discuss drainage and finished elevations early

Tell your contractor where water collects after rain and whether you have experienced drainage problems near the house.

Ask how the proposed patio will meet existing doors, steps, sidewalks, and lawn areas, and where surface water will go. Existing downspouts and drainage outlets should be considered as part of that discussion.

Addressing these questions during planning helps avoid a finished surface that creates new water problems.

Understand the excavation and preparation

The work beneath a patio matters as much as its appearance. Ask what removal, excavation, base preparation, and grading are included in your estimate.

Discuss whether excess soil or old materials will be hauled away and whether the surrounding lawn will need restoration. Site conditions can affect the amount of preparation required, so clarify how unexpected conditions will be handled.

Choose a finish that fits your priorities

Bring examples of colors, textures, and patterns you like. Ask about the options your contractor installs and the care each requires.

If you are considering stamped concrete, review the pattern, base color, accent color, and border details together. Photographs are useful references, but finished colors can vary. Ask how samples or previous projects can help you make a selection.

Plan for equipment access and yard repairs

Construction may require equipment and material deliveries through your yard. Discuss gates, fences, landscaping, irrigation, septic components, and other features that could affect access.

Agree on the access route, what will be protected, and what restoration is included afterward. Ask who will coordinate any required utility locating before excavation.

Know what happens after installation

Ask when the patio can be walked on, when furniture can be placed, and what maintenance is recommended for the selected material.

Before work begins, also confirm who your main contact will be and how weather-related schedule changes will be communicated.
